On Tuesday, at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital, Councillor Rob Ford passed away after an 18 month battle with cancer; age 46.
Following a decade spent in the City Council, Ford was the Mayor of Toronto from 2010 to 2014.
His political antics and brutal honesty in front of rolling cameras made him a city favorite; but several initial denied allegations turned revelation of drug-abuse while in office made him an international phenomenon.
Ford’s new celebrity status was mocked and propelled by the likes of American talk shows hosts such as Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, David Letterman, Jay Leno and Jimmy Kimmel — whose show “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Ford courageously went to appear on in March 2014.
Whether he was recorded practicing his patois in Caribbean restaurants, or enjoying Toronto’s renowned Caribana, Ford always stayed true to his character.
He loved the city, and the city loved him back.
His life and term in office may have been brief, turbulent, and short-lived, but his colorful personality and passion to bring political change will live on through his family and city.
It is widely hoped that he is dancing with Bob Marley, to Bob Marley somewhere in another dimension.
